High School Terror?

So today was my first day of subbing for a high school class...subbed for 2 humanities 8 and 2 socials 10 classes. Walking into the high school brought back memories of my high school days...chilling in the cafeteria, on the stairs, in front of the lockers and so on. I hafta admit it was a bit terrifying to see that the students that I'll be teaching would be towering over me. But I put on a tough front and I think it worked since I didn't have any major problems with the kids. I would say that the grade 8s are much easier to teach than the grade 10s. I think the grade 8s haven't really discovered how to make life difficult for subs yet. haha. I'm still glad that I decided to teach elementary kids instead of high school kids as my career. I'd probably fit in as one of the high school students. One student asked me where I got my glasses and then asked if it was Dolce & Gabbana brand. I forgot that kids can be quite materialistic and brand name oriented.

On a good note, I was able to catch up with an old teacher of mine who taught at that high school. He taught me Physics and Biology in grades 11 and 12. It was nice to see how he was doing and stuff. He has a pretty good memory to remember me, my sister, and other students that he had...I mean it has been at least 6 years since I last saw him. Very impressive. hehe. He was probably one of my favourite teachers in high school.

TOCing

My thoughts on my first couple days: interesting
The first day was a breeze as I ended up TOCing for teachers who want prep time so basiscally I was supervising. Second day was way more interesting. I took a job that I was kinda iffy about - Elementary Music. Basically I didn't know what to expect before going in. I kinda prepared some activities in case I had no clue what to do. Thank goodness that I had all the good kids in the morning to prep me for the rowdy kids in the afternoon! First thing when I walked into the classroom was to look at what the teacher left me. Oh man, her day book was so confusing! I had no idea what I was supposed to teach so I started to freak. But then I decided since the first couple grades were the older grades, I would have them tell me what they've been doing. Ended up going through recorder songs. It was pretty fun and at least I could tell if they were on beat or not. Then the "REAL" fun began....with the younger grades. We ended up singing songs and me playing the piano to accompany them. To fill in time, I taught them the "swimming" song in which the younger grades REALLY loved! The most hard to control class was the Kindergartens.......arg, I don't think I'm a primary teacher at all. lol. But at least nothing bad happened. phewf. So yah, guess it's interesting when I take a job that I'm not really trained in. hehe. Yay for risk-taking ;)

Books GALORE!!

What can I say? I'm such a sucker for kids books....specially when they're on sale or for a good deal! This past Thursday, let's just say I spent about $150 on just books. But before you go WHOA, THAT'S INSANE let me give my defence (tho it's not much of one...haha). First of all, I don't usually go and buy books. Secondly this is an annual event - the scholastic warehouse sale. Thirdly, everything was 50% off the lowest ticketed price. And lastly, I bought about 80 books so it works out to be about $2 per book.

The best deals were the ones which were prepackaged - 2 books for the price of 1. And those prepackaged books were only $1 per pack!!!! So essentially it's only 50 cents per book. The downside to that is that there were many doubles since a lot of the books were packed with another book that I wanted. Oh wells, still cheap. Those extra ones I'll just give away =) But yes, I love Scholastic and I love buying books. Pictures of my stash of books to come....
