As my title says, that's what we essentially did. We took a 6 day road trip up north along the west coast of Australia. With our camping gears and food all packed into our rental car we were ready for adventure. And boy, did we sure encounter some adventures! Let's start from the first day...so we rented a camry and this car is pretty much brand spanking new with only 4 km logged on it. Becks made a passing comment that something would prbly happen to it since it was so new. Now keep that in mind as I continue with some other story.
Bright and early on Friday morning, we drove off towards the highway. Well, WA has many different highways...apparently Becks decided that she thought she knew where she was going so she didn't need to check the map. About a few hours in, we had a rock chip on the windshield that began to spread. We had to get the windshield replaced =( So yup, there's that "something" that happened to the brand new car. We looked at the map and realized that we had to go to this town called Geraldton but we were like 4 hrs away since we took the wrong highway!! Geraldton was supposed to be on the way to where we wanted to head to (Monkey Mia) and that highway was the Coastal Hwy...but we took a highway that was more inland. Hahaha, so talk about adventure. We ended up on the first day driving and when we arrived to Geraldton it was time for us to set up our tent, eat dinner and rest up (and play pool since the campsite had a games room). Way to start our camping trip...
On our second day we headed up north towards Ningaloo Reef. We made it as far as Coral Bay and stayed there for the night. Nothing too exciting happened that day other than having our car fixed at Geraldton and then many more hours of driving.
Our third day we drove up to Exmouth...our final northern destination! There we decided to go snorkelling at Ningaloo Reef. Yup, I was again peer pressured into doing another water sport...this time was a bit scarier as the water level was even higher...but I could still stand up with the water reaching my nose/eyes. I had to use a floating device/board to help me stay afloat since I can't swim and all. It was fun to see all the corals and colourful fish!
Our fourth day we went to Monkey Mia...spent most of the day driving again. It was POURING rain that day so we decided to sleep in our car at night instead of the tent since we didn't really have a tarp to put over our tent. That night was interesting. Met some talkative kids that were telling us stories about their dogs. They've been on the road for 5 weeks! Crazy long holiday..and they still had 2 more weeks to go with their family before going home. That's A LOT of driving (since they're from southern Australia)!
On our fifth day, we saw dolphins at Monkey Mia...wild dolphins that swim in close to the beach area to get fed. It was pretty cool! Becks got to feed one of the dolphins. There were about 6-8 of them that came in...moms and their pups. It was cool to watch them play, catch fish, and communicate to each other. We also saw HUGE pelicans waiting to swoop down on the fish. hahaha. But then they just went onto the beach and relaxed there.
Our last day was just driving back to Perth as we had to return our rental car by 4 pm. But we did stop by this National park to see the pinnacles which are these limestone pillars. They look quite neat. Anyways, guess how many km we added to the car? A WHOPPING 3684 km were added! The grand total km on the car was 3688. Crazy, eh? Good on Becks to be able to drive that much since Mich and I didn't do any driving at all (with the roads being on opposite sides of what we're used to).
This trip was really fun...God kept us safe and we were able to take a ton of pics! Although this was a bit pricey trip as we had to pay for the windshield plus petrol. It costs an avg of $1.50 per litre for petrol...it went as high as $1.65!! Crazy...can't complain about Vancouver's prices now. Costs about $100ish to fill a tank! Sigh...oh wells. That's life I guess.
Now we have just one more day in Perth before Mich and I will be heading to Cairns. Can't wait!
